THREE GENERALS NAMED TO FOOTBALL GAZETTE ALL-REGION
TEAM LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Don Hansen Football Gazette All-South Region Team
was announced on Friday afternoon and Washington and Lee had three players
honored. Junior offensive lineman Mat Rapoza (Kill Devil Hills, N.C./Manteo)
and junior tight end Jay Thomas (Houston, Texas/Kincaid) were named to
the second team, while junior running back Chris Sullivan (San Antonio,
Texas/Alamo Heights) was selected to the third team. Rapoza was the leader of a very young offensive line which paved the
way for an average of 331.0 yards per game. The line surrendered just
10 sacks in 276 pass attempts for the season. He was also named First
Team All-ODAC in 2001. Thomas had his best year in a Generals' uniform, leading the team in
receptions (38), receiving yards (575) and receiving touchdowns (6). He
was named Honorable Mention All-ODAC. Sullivan also had a career season, leading the NCAA Division III with
2,024 all-purpose yards. He rushed for 1,189 yards and eight touchdowns
on a school-record 253 carries, caught 27 passes for 268 yards and another
touchdown, returned 19 punts for 204 yards and returned 13 kicks for 347
yards and one touchdown. Sullivan also earned First Team All-ODAC honors. Washington and Lee finished the 2001 season with a 5-5 overall record,
3-3 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Generals finished in
a four-way tie for second place in the ODAC. -- GENERALS --
