JAY THOMAS NAMED FIRST TEAM VERIZON ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee junior tight end Jay Thomas (Houston,
Texas/Kincaid) was named to the Verizon College Division Football Academic
All-America squad on Monday morning as voted on by members of the College
Sports Information Directors of America. Thomas was placed on the first team, the first athlete from W&L
to do so since swimmer Nathan Hottle during the 1996-97 season. He is
also the first football player named to the first team since Evans Edwards
during the 1992 season. A business administration major with a 3.77 grade-point average (GPA),
Thomas had his best season in a W&L uniform during the 2001 season.
He played in all 10 games, tallying team-highs in receptions (38), receiving
yards (575) and touchdowns (6). Following the season, Thomas was named
Honorable Mention All-ODAC and Second Team All-South Region. Thomas is Washington and Lee's 30th Academic All-America selection
and the ninth W&L athlete to earn first team honors since 1975.
The Verizon Academic All-America College Division comprises all NCAA-member
