JESSICA MENTZ NAMED ALL-AMERICAN
Senior Earns Honorable Mention Accolades From DIII News
LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee senior forward Jessica Mentz (Ellicott
City, Md./Centennial) was named a DIII News Honorable Mention All-American
as released on Tuesday afternoon. Mentz is the first women's basketball
player to earn All-American honors in the history of the program.
The most decorated women's basketball player in school history, Mentz
became the first W&L women's basketball player to garner conference
player of the year honors after finishing second in the league in scoring
(20.0 ppg) and first in rebounding (11.8 rpg). Her 20.0 points per contest
were 16th in Division III, while her rebounding total ranked 15th in the
country.
The 5-foot-9 Mentz is the only W&L women's basketball player to have
earned first team all-conference honors, having done so in each of the
past two seasons. She was honorable mention all-conference as a sophomore
and second team all-conference as a freshman when she earned the ODAC
Rookie of the Year award.
Mentz set 21 school records during her career and is W&L's all-time
leading scorer (1,742) and rebounder (973). Her scoring total ranks sixth
in the history of Division III women's basketball in the state of Virginia.
In addition to garnering All-American honors this season, Mentz was named
the Virginia College Division Player of the Year and First Team All-Region.
Washington and Lee finished the 2001-02 season with a 12-14 overall record,
9-11 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
