MENTZ NAMED ODAC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR
SALEM, Va. -- Washington and Lee senior forward Jessica
Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) was named the Old Dominion Athletic
Conference women's basketball Player of the Year in voting conducted by
the league's coaches. In addition, senior center Megan Babst (Pittsburgh,
Pa./Fox Chapel) was named to the all-conference second team.
Mentz, a First Team All-ODAC selection for the second consecutive
season, is the only W&L women's basketball player to have earned first
team all-conference honors. She was honorable mention all-conference as
a sophomore and second team all-conference as a freshman when she earned
the ODAC Rookie of the Year award.
The 5-foot-9 Mentz had perhaps her finest season in a W&L
uniform this season. She leads the ODAC in rebounding (11.6 rpg.) and
is second in scoring (19.6 ppg.), shooting 49.3 percent from the floor.
For her career, Mentz owns 20 school records, including
career scoring (1,713) and career rebounding (955). Her scoring total
ranks sixth in the history of Division III basketball in the state of
Babst has had her finest season in 2001-02, placing third
in the ODAC in scoring (19.2 ppg.) and rebounding (10.1 rpg.). She also
leads the league with an average of 2.1 blocks per game.
The 6-foot-1 Babst holds nine school records, including
blocks in a season (57), career blocks (190) and rebounds in a game (21).
She is second all-time at W&L in scoring (1,251) and rebounding (915),
trailing only Mentz.
Currently, the Generals are competing in the ODAC Tournament
in Salem, Va. W&L, the sixth seed, faces third-seeded Emory &
Henry in an opening round game Thursday evening at 8:00 pm.
