Roanoke Edges Out W&L For Top Spot

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's soccer team was picked to finish second in the 2001 ODAC Preseason Coaches Poll released Monday morning.

The Generals received 19 points, including five first-place votes. Roanoke College edged out W&L with 18 points and three first-place votes. The Generals play host to Roanoke on Saturday, October 6 at 11:00 am.

Last season, W&L won the ODAC Championship and claimed an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Championships where it lost to Christopher Newport, 1-0, in the South Region Final. Head coach Rolf Piranian will welcome back seven starters from last season's team which won a school-record 19 games.

Virginia Wesleyan, who the Generals defeated 1-0 in last year's ODAC Championship, was picked third with 26 points and one first-place vote. Hampden-Sydney and Randolph-Macon rounded out the top five.

The Generals open their season on September 8 with an 11:00 am contest at Catholic University.
