Hanson And Dean On First Team; Gladysz Makes Second Team

Senior first baseman and Second Team All-South Region honoree Brian Gladysz

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Three members of the Washington and Lee baseball team were named to the 2003 American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings NCAA Division III All-South Region team which was announced on Monday.

Senior shortstop Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) and junior pitcher Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) were named to the first team, while senior first baseman Brian Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) earned second team laurels.

Hanson, who was a second team all-region selection last year, earned first team accolades in 2003 after hitting .371 with five home runs, 12 doubles, 23 RBIs, 14 stolen bases and a school-record 46 runs. A four-time All-ODAC selection and the 2003 conference player of the year, Hanson is a career .360 hitter and will graduate as W&L's all-time leader in games played (136), at-bats (519), hits (187), runs (148), doubles (43), triples (13) and stolen bases (51). Dating to Apr. 18, 2001, Hanson had reached base in 74 straight games.

A lefthander, Dean went 8-2 with a 1.67 ERA, threw six complete games and two shutouts, and recorded 73 strikeouts while issuing just eight walks to earn first team honors. A second team all-region selection in 2002, he is currently W&L's all-time ERA leader (2.14), while his 20 career wins are three shy of the all-time mark. He was named a first team all-conference pitcher for the second straight season.

Gladysz earned second team honors after finishing fourth on the team in average (.358), second in RBIs (33) and doubles (12), and drawing a single-season school-record 31 walks. He also was named a First Team All-ODAC selection and earned a spot on the All-ODAC Tournament team this season.

The Generals (28-8) finished as the runner-up in the ODAC Tournament.
