W&L PLACES EIGHT ON NFHCA NATIONAL ACADEMIC SQUAD
LEXINGTON, Va. -- Eight members of the Washington and Lee field hockey
team were named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association National
Academic Squad which was released on Tuesday. Freshman midfielder Jan Beall (Midlothian, Va./James River), sophomore
forward Kristen Brown (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville), senior defender Kathleen
Gibson (Charlottesville, Va./Covenant School), freshman goaltender Courtney
Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate), freshman defender Katharine Lester
(Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends), sophomore defender Kyle Meehan
(Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury), sophomore midfielder Kitt Murphy (Richmond,
Va./St. Catherine's) and exchange student Joanna Slack (Coventry, U.K./King
Henry VIII School), a forward, were all honored for acheiving a cumulative
grade-point average of 3.3 or higher. A total of 751 players from 114 Division III schools were honored on
the team. Messiah and Dickinson led the way with 15 players each on the
team. The Old Dominion Athletic Conference placed 50 players on the squad
led by Eastern Mennonite and W&L with eight players. Bridgewater and
Virginia Wesleyan each placed seven on the team, followed by Hollins (6),
Sweet Briar (5), Lynchburg (4), Randolph-Macon Woman's College (3) and
Roanoke (2). Washington and Lee completed the 2002 season with a 10-9 overall record,
6-3 in the ODAC. The Generals advanced to the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament
in just their second full year of varsity competition. -- GENERALS --
