FIVE GENERALS EARN ALL-SOUTH ATLANTIC REGION ALL-AMERICA
HONORS
LEXINGTON, Va. -- Five Washington and Lee women's lacrosse
players were named to the Brine/Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches
Association South Atlantic Region All-America team. Senior defender Sarah Janowitz (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright),
junior attacker Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) and sophomore
midfielder Kitt Murphy (Richmond, Va./St. Catherine's) were selected to
the first team, while a pair of juniors, goaltender Joanna Perini (Huntington,
N.Y./Huntington) and attacker Lee Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr),
earned second team accolades. Janowitz earned all-region honors for the second consecutive
season. After being a second team selection in 2002, Janowitz garnered
first team honors in 2003 after scooping up a team-best 70 ground balls
and causing 14 turnovers while helping hold the Generals' opposition to
an average of 6.83 goals per game. Additionally, she was named the Old
Dominion Athletic Conference Player of the Year. Taffe was named all-region for the first time after leading
W&L in scoring with 57 goals and 18 assists. A 2003 First Team All-ODAC
selection, she is third all-time in scoring at W&L with 168 points
(126 goals, 42 assists). Murphy's first team selection comes after a season in which
she scored 17 points (14 goals, three assists) and was second on the team
in ground balls (53), draw controls (35) and caused-turnovers (21). She
was a first team all-conference honoree as well. Perini was named a second team all-region performer for
the second time after posting a 6.90 goals-against average. A First Team
All-ODAC selection this season, she carried a .541 save percentage. Wheeler, a second team all-region selection in 2001, was
named to the second team again this year after finishing third on the
team in scoring with 48 points on 35 goals and 13 assists. An Honorable
Mention All-ODAC player this season, she has 135 career points on 100
goals and 35 assists. Washington and Lee went 15-3 overall this year and captured the ODAC championship. The Generals fell, 12-7, to Mary Washington in the NCAA Tournament. -- GENERALS -- |
