Miranda To Also Have Responsibilities As Athletic Administrative Assistant

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee Athletic Director Mike Walsh has announced the appointment of Melissa Miranda as assistant field hockey coach and athletic administrative assistant. The position is largely funded by the NCAA Ethnic Minority and Women's Enhancement Internship Program. Miranda will begin her appointment in early August.

"We are pleased to have Melissa coaching and working in athletic administration at Washington and Lee," said Walsh. "She's developed an impressive reputation as a field hockey player and coach. We are also pleased to be a recipient of the NCAA Ethnic Minority and Women's Enhancement Internship and feel that with Melissa we have a perfect match, a very impressive person interested in pursuing a career in coaching and athletic administration."

"I look forward to working with the field hockey team and athletic administration at Washington and Lee University," said Miranda. "Since this program is only in its third year, I am excited to be given the opportunity to utilize my coaching ability to help establish it."

Miranda is a 1999 graduate of Longwood College where she earned a bachelor of science degree in physical education. She played four years of field hockey and three years of lacrosse at Longwood, captaining both teams. She garnered the 1998 field hockey coaches award and was named to the 1998 NFHCA North-South Senior All-Star Team.

Miranda served as the head junior varsity and assistant varsity coach at Kempsville High School in Virginia Beach during the fall of 2000 and has worked numerous summer field hockey camps, including the Nike Field Hockey Camp, University of Maryland Super Camp and All-East Field Hockey Camp.

"Melissa's experience both as a player and a coach are extensive and make her the ideal addition to our program," said W&L Head Field Hockey Coach Wendy Orrison. "I think her skill level combined with her outgoing personality will help compliment the team and our goals for the future."

The NCAA Ethnic Minority and Women's Enhancement Internship program was created to increase the pool of and opportunities for qualified minority and female candidates in intercollegiate athletics.
