W&L WOMEN'S TENNIS RANKED SECOND NATIONALLY
LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's tennis
team has earned a preseason ranking of No. 2 in NCAA Division III in the
Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Ranking which was announced Nov. 27.
Emory (Atlanta) garnered the preseason No. 1 spot, followed
by W&L, Amherst (Mass.), Trinity (Texas) and Gustavus (Minn.) in the
top five. Rounding out the top 10 are Williams (Mass.), Tufts (Mass.),
Pomona-Pitzer (Calif.), Rhodes (Tenn.) and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (Calif.)
and Washington University (Mo.) in a tie for 10th.
W&L defeated Trinity, 5-4, to earn third place in last
year's national tournament.
Back for her final season is senior co-captain Erika Proko
(Charlotte, N.C/Providence Day), who advanced to the national semifinals
in individual competition a year ago. Sophomore Lindsay Hagerman (Dallas,
Texas/Highland Park) also returns a year after having been named the Intercollegiate
Tennis Association (ITA) NCAA Division III Co-National Rookie of the Year.
The Generals' 2003 season will get underway on Sat., March 1 with matches versus Virginia Wesleyan and at Emory & Henry.
