Men Ranked Sixth; Women Ranked Seventh In South Region

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) has released its 2002 regional rankings and the Washington and Lee men's and women's teams were both recognized in the South Region polls. The W&L men are ranked sixth, while the women are rated seventh.

The Washington and Lee men's team returns to the field following a 12-4-1 campaign in 2001. The Generals finished the season as the ODAC runner-up, falling to Roanoke in the ODAC Championship game.

Greensboro College sits atop the poll followed by Mary Washington, Salisbury, Virginia Wesleyan, Christopher Newport, W&L, St. Mary's (Md.), Hampden-Sydney, Roanoke and North Carolina Wesleyan.

The W&L women closed the 2001 season with an 11-4-1 overall record, advancing to the ODAC Tournament Semifinals for the 13th consecutive season.

Emory University took the top spot on the women's side, followed by Trinity (Texas), Lynchburg, Roanoke, Hardin-Simmons, Maryville (Tenn.), W&L, Virginia Wesleyan, Greensboro and Christopher Newport.

The W&L men's squad begins its 2002 season on Friday as it takes on Trinity (Texas) in the Southwestern University Tournament. Game time is set for 12:00 pm. The W&L women open the season on Saturday at Virginia Wesleyan at 11:00 am.
