W&L BASEBALL PLACES FOUR ON VaSID ALL-STATE TEAM
LEXINGTON, Va. -- Four members of the record-setting Washington
and Lee baseball team were named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors
(VaSID) All-State Team which was released on Tuesday. Senior shortstop Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy)
and junior pitcher Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) were first team
honorees, while senior first baseman Brian Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley
Prep) and junior rightfielder Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville)
were named to the honorable mention team. The award winners were selected
in voting by Virginia's sports information directors. Hanson played his way onto the all-state team for the first
time after hitting .371 with five home runs, 12 doubles, 23 RBIs, 14 stolen
bases and a school-record 46 runs this year. The 2003 ODAC Player of the
Year, a First Team All-South Region selection and a Third Team All-American,
he hit .360 for his career. Additionally, he graduates as W&L's all-time
leader in games played (136), at-bats (519), hits (187), runs (148), doubles
(43), triples (13) and stolen bases (51). The Generals' leadoff hitter,
he finished his career having reached base in 74 straight games dating
back to April of 2001. W&L's lefthanded ace, Dean went 8-2 with a 1.67 ERA
this year. He fired six complete games and two shutouts, recording 73
strikeouts with just eight walks. Currently the W&L all-time ERA leader
(2.14), his 20 career wins are only three shy of the all-time mark. In
addition to earning first team all-conference and all-region honors this
season, he was named a Second Team Verizon Academic All-American. Gladysz, a First Team All-ODAC and Second Team All-South
Region selection, was named Honorable Mention All-State after finishing
fourth on the team in average (.358), second in RBIs (33) and doubles
(12), and drawing a single-season school-record 31 walks. Mulhern had team-highs in batting average (.392), home runs
(6), hits (56) and RBIs (48). A first team all-conference selection, his
hit and RBI totals are single-season W&L records, while his 92 career
RBIs are a program record. W&L won a school-record 28 games this season and finished
as the runner-up in the ODAC Tournament. -- GENERALS -- |
