W&L PLACES THREE ON ALL-STATE WOMEN'S LACROSSE
TEAM
LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Virginia Sports Information Director's
Association (VaSID) announced its 2003 College Division All-State Women's
Lacrosse team on Thursday morning and Washington and Lee claimed three
members of the first and second team. Senior defender Sarah Janowitz (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright)
was named to the first team, while junior attacker Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville,
Va./Albemarle) and junior goalkeeper Joanna Perini (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington)
were second team selections. Longwood's Emily Bikowski and Janet Grubbs
were named the VaSID Player and Coach of the Year, respectively. Janowitz was named to the first team after garnering ODAC
Player of the Year, First Team All-Region and Second Team All-America
honors. She was the leader of a W&L defense which allowed an average
of just 6.83 goals per game, the 13th-best total in Division III. Taffe was a second team selection after leading W&L
in scoring with 57 goals and 18 assists. A 2003 First Team All-ODAC and
First Team All-Region selection, she is third all-time in scoring at W&L
with 168 points (126 goals, 42 assists). Perini was also placed on the second team after garnering
First Team All-ODAC and Second Team All-Region honors. She ranked 12th
in Division III with a 6.90 goals-against average while compiling a .541
save percentage. The Generals finished the 2003 season with a 15-3 overall
record. W&L's 15 wins tied the school record and all were in succession,
another school-best. The Generals won the ODAC title and advanced to the
NCAA Tournament were they fell to Mary Washington, 12-7, in the second
