FOUR GENERALS NAMED TO VaSID ACADEMIC ALL-STATE TEAM
HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Washington and Lee had four athletes
recognized on the 2004 Virginia Sports Information Directors Association
(VaSID) Academic All-State Team which was voted on by the members and
released on Friday afternoon. Senior baseball player Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison)
was named to the first team, while senior women's soccer player Heather
Coleman (Blackwood, N.J./Triton Regional), senior swimmer Eric Ritter
(Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) and junior tennis player Lindsay Hagerman
(Wichita Falls, Texas/Highland Park) were all named to the second team. Dean garnered first team honors after accumulating a 3.67
cumulative grade-point average (GPA) as a chemistry major. A 2004 CoSIDA
Second Team Academic All-American, ODAC Pitcher of the Year and a three-time
First Team All-ODAC selection, he set a school-record for victories in
a season, going 9-2 with three saves and a 2.33 earned-run average (ERA)
this spring. He also notched 64 strikeouts and just 11 walks in a school-record
88.2 innings of work. Dean finished his four seasons with an ODAC- and
school-record 29 wins against just seven losses and a school-record 2.20
ERA. He also set new W&L records for career strikeouts (232), career
appearances (54) and innings pitched (290.2). Coleman was named to the second team after recording a 4.077
GPA as an economics and politics major. A Third Team CoSIDA Academic All-American
during the fall, she also earned ODAC Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year
and W&L Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors for 2003-04. She recorded
two goals and three assists last fall and leaves W&L with 18 goals
and nine assists for her career, ranking eighth all-time at W&L with
44 points. Ritter claimed a 3.879 cumulative grade-point average as
a biology and classics major. Earlier this spring, he was awarded the
prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. As a swimmer, Ritter qualified
for the NCAA Championships all four years, earning All-America honors
five times. A four-time College Swimming Coaches Association of America
(CSCAA) Academic All-American, Ritter graduated holding school records
in the 100 backstroke (51.07), 200 backstroke (1:51.91), 200 medley relay
(1:36.12) and 400 medley relay (3:30.18). As a senior, Ritter led W&L
to a 7-0 record and a Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championship. A First
Team All-Bluegrass Mountain Conference selection, Ritter finished seventh
in the 100 back and 13th in the 200 back at the 2004 NCAA Championships.
A history major, Hagerman also earned an appointment to the second team after claiming a 3.64 cumulative grade-point average. Playing at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles for the W&L womens tennis team, Hagerman led the Generals to their 13th ODAC Championship in the last 14 years and a fourth-place national finish in Division III. After being named ODAC Womens Tennis Player and Scholar-Athlete of the Year, she earned All-America honors in both singles and doubles. On the season, she claimed a 31-5 record in singles and a 29-7 record in doubles. -- GENERALS -- |
