LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's and
women's cross country squads both garnered recognition as Cross Country
Association Division III Academic All-America teams for their success
on the course and in the classroom.
Junior Steven Chambers (Christiana, Pa./Octorara Area) headlined the achievement
as an Academic All-American. To be eligible, an athlete must finish in
the top 25 percent at their regional meet and claim a cumulative grade-point
average (GPA) of 3.50 or higher.
Chambers, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Men's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete
of the Year, is a business major with a 3.849 GPA. He earned Second Team
All-ODAC honors this season after finishing 11th at the ODAC Cross Country
Championships with a time of 29:49.00. In addition, Chambers finished
30th overall at the South/Southwest Regional meet with a time of 27:49.66.
The Generals' men's team was among 63 squads and the women's team was
among 101 squads which fit the criteria of having a team grade-point average
of at-least 3.1.
For the men, W&L earned a 3.247 team GPA, while Carnegie Mellon University
led the way with a 3.57 team GPA. On the women's side, the Generals recorded
a 3.180 team GPA, while Goucher topped the list with a 3.764 team GPA.
