W&L's DEAN AWARDED NCAA POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP
Recent Graduate Among 58 Spring Sports Awardees

Peter Dean

INDIANAPOLIS. Ind. -- Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison), a recent graduate of Washington and Lee University, has been awarded a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Postgraduate Scholarship. The award is a $7,500 scholarship for academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full-time or part-time graduate student.

Dean was one of 58 awardees from NCAA All-Divisions who received the scholarship after participating in a spring sport. The NCAA awards 174 scholarships annually in the fall, winter and spring seasons. Dean joins classmate Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook), who received a winter sports scholarship after participating with the W&L swimming program. Dean's selection gave W&L two scholarship winners in a year for the second straight year and raised W&L's all-time Postgraduate Scholarship total to 23 athletes since 1970.

A chemistry major and four-year member of the football and baseball teams at W&L, Dean graduated with a 3.652 cumulative grade-point average. The 2004 W&L Male Athlete of the Year, Dean will attend medical school at the University of Virginia in the fall.

In baseball, Dean was a four-year letterwinner and a team captain as a senior when he set a school record for victories, going 9-2 overall with three saves. He posted a 2.33 ERA in a school-record 88.2 innings, and struck out 64 with only 11 walks. The 2004 ODAC Pitcher and Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Dean also garnered First Team All-ODAC, First Team All-State, First Team All-Region, First Team Academic All-District and Second Team Academic All-America honors this past spring.

A three-time First Team All-ODAC and two-time First Team All-State, First Team All-Region and Second Team Academic All-America pick, Dean finished his career as the Old Dominion Athletic Conference career wins leader with a 29-7 career record. He also holds the school career records for ERA (2.20), strikeouts (232), appearances (54) and innings pitched (290.2).

In football, Dean was a three-year starter at quarterback and finished his career as the school's sixth all-time leading passer with 3,469 yards and 19 touchdowns.

In addition to his work on the playing field and in the classroom, Dean also served as the President of the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Fraternity and Associate Editor of Chemistry for the W&L Journal of Science, and has volunteered his time in several hospitals over the years.
