DETWILER EARNS USTA/ITA COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD
SKILLMAN, N.J. -- The U.S. Tennis Association (USTA) and
the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) presented their Campus Recreation
and Community Service Awards during the 19th annual ITA Coaches Convention
on Dec. 12-15 in Miami. Washington and Lee Head Men's Tennis Coach David
Detwiler received the USTA/ITA Community Service Award for the Mid-Atlantic
Region at the proceedings. The USTA/ITA Community Service Award honors an ITA coach
for significant contributions in developing community-based tennis programs
through community centers, schools, parks, community tennis associations,
inner city, suburban or rural programs. As director of Washington and Lee's Duchossois Tennis Center,
Detwiler has been vital to providing tennis instruction to the Washington
and Lee and Lexington communities since the facility's opening in the
winter of 1997. Detwiler is in his fourth year as men's tennis coach after
three seasons as an assistant coach with the Generals' women's tennis
program. His first three seasons as coach of the men's team have resulted
in three ODAC Championships, three trips to the NCAA Division III Tournament
and a 41-15 overall record. Before arriving at W&L, Detwiler spent eight years as
the Tennis Director at Shadow Oaks Racquet Club in Greenville, S.C. Greg Patton of Boise State University was the national recipient
of the USTA/ITA Community Service Award, while University of Delaware
men's and women's coach Laura Travis received the national USTA/ITA Campus
