Senior Cross Country and Track Athlete Named to Second Team

Senior Nathan Johnson

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Washington and Lee senior Nathan Johnson (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America College Division Cross Country and Track & Field team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Johnson, a mathematics and economics major with a 3.731 cumulative grade-point average, was named to the second team.

The two-time ODAC Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year, Johnson also swept the ODAC's major academic awards in his sports this year as he claimed ODAC Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor Track Scholar-Athlete of the Year laurels. He was also named the ODAC Cross Country Runner of the Year after winning the ODAC Championship meet. Johnson then won the NCAA South/Southeast Regional meet and advanced to the NCAA Cross Country National Championships where he finished 83rd out of 215 runners.

A two-time winner of the ODAC 1,500 and 5,000 meter races, Johnson holds school records in the indoor 3,000 meters (8:37.24), 5,000 meters (15:35.93) and distance medley relay (10:50.76), and the outdoor 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:19.21) and distance medley relay (10:37.98).

With Johnson’s selection to the ESPN/CoSIDA Academic All-America team, W&L improved its all-time total to 40 athletes honored since 1975. Senior outside hitter Emily Wolfing was named to the Academic All-America Volleyball team during the fall.

The CoSIDA College Division consists of athletes from all NCAA Division II, III and NAIA schools across the United States.
