McCLURE, HAGERMAN HIGHLIGHT AWARD WINNERS AT W&L
LEXINGTON, Va. -- Seniors Paul McClure (Memphis, Tenn./Memphis
University School) and Lindsay Hagerman (Wichita Falls, Texas/Highland
Park) headed the list of honorees at the annual Washington and Lee
University Athletic Awards Ceremony on May 17 at W&Ls Lee Chapel.
McClure was named the Pres Brown Outstanding Senior Male Athlete, while
Hagerman was the female recipient of the award.
McClure is a four-year letterwinner for the men's tennis
team, serving as team captain this year. A three-time First Team All-ODAC
and two-time ODAC Player of the Year honoree, he garnered All-America
honors in singles during the 2004 season. The 2002 W&L Freshman Male
Athlete of the Year, McClure also received the 2005 ODAC Men's Tennis
Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. He claims a 63-40 career singles record
and a 58-38 career doubles mark. McClure will be competing in the NCAA
Singles and Doubles Championships this week.
Hagerman is a four-year letterwinner and a team captain
this year for the women's tennis team. She has received First Team All-ODAC
honors three times and is a two-time ODAC Player of the Year and ODAC
Women's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year. A six-time All-American, Hagerman
holds the school-record for career singles (110-17) and doubles (106-15)
victories and was the ITA Division III singles champion during the fall
season. Additionally, Hagerman was the first runner-up for the NCAA Walter
Byers Scholarship, is a CoSIDA Academic All-American and will receive
an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. Like McClure, Hagerman was the 2002
W&L Freshman Female Athlete of the Year.
In other major awards handed out at the ceremony, senior
volleyball player Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) received
the William McHenry Scholar-Athlete Award. Wolfing carries a 3.785 cumulative
grade-point average while majoring in physics and mathematics. She is
a two-time First Team All-ODAC, First Team All-State and ODAC Volleyball
Scholar-Athlete of the Year honoree. She was also twice named to the all-region
team and was selected an Honorable Mention All-American and ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA
Third Team Academic All-American this past fall. Wolfing finished her
career ranked first all-time at W&L in digs (1,557) and second in
Senior Bethany Dannelly (Raleigh, N.C./Enloe) was
named the recipient of the Wink Glasgow Spirit & Sportsmanship Award.
Dannelly was a four-year letterwinner and two-year captain for the women's
basketball team and was a three-year letterwinner for the women's track
& field team. She graduates as the women's basketball program's all-time
leader in assists (459) and steals (197).
Golfer Nathaniel James (Keller, Texas/Keller) was
named the Outstanding Freshman Male Athlete of the Year, while cross country
and track athlete Lindsay Erickson (Silver Spring, Md./Stone Ridge)
was named the Outstanding Freshman Female Athlete of the Year. James was
named First Team All-ODAC after carding one of the lowest stroke averages
in school history (74.9). Erickson earned First Team All-ODAC honors in
cross country and track, and was the ODAC Cross Country Runner and Rookie
of the Year and a national championship meet qualifier.
Louise Uffelman of the University's communications
office was honored with the R.E. Chub Yeakel Memorial Service
Award for her support of Washington and Lee athletics over the years.
Senior Kelly Jo Larsen received the Lefty Newell Memorial Award
for her contributions to the W&L lacrosse teams, while junior Ingrid
Easton received the Richard Miller Physical Education Scholarship.
