Duo Becomes W&L's First Doubles All-Americans Since 1991

Junior David Shay

SKILLMAN, N.J. -- Washington and Lee senior Paul McClure (Memphis, Tenn./Memphis University School) and junior David Shay (Martinez, Ga./Augusta Prep) have earned All-America honors in doubles based upon their final national ranking by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

McClure and Shay were ranked ninth in the final ITA Division III doubles rankings with each of the Top 10 doubles teams earning All-America accolades.

The duo become the first players from W&L to earn All-America honors in doubles since Bill Meadows and Robby McNaughton earned All-America accolades during the 1991 season.

McClure also earned All-America honors in singles during the 2005 season and finished with a singles ranking of No. 16. A two-time ODAC Player of the Year and the 2005 ODAC Men's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year and ODAC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, McClure also claimed All-America honors in singles during the 2004 season. He finished his career with a 64-41 singles record and a 58-39 doubles mark.

Shay adds the All-America award to a resume which includes being a three-time First Team All-ODAC honoree and singles All-American in 2004. He will enter his senior season with a 60-21 career singles record and a 35-21 career doubles record.

Washington and Lee finished the 2005 season with a 16-6 overall record and claimed its 10th straight ODAC Championship. The Generals advanced to the NCAA Tournament Second Round before falling to second-ranked Emory University, 4-0.
