Will Also Have Responsibilities as Athletic Administrative Assistant

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee Athletic Director Mike Walsh has announced the appointment of Dean'na Mitchelson as assistant women's basketball coach and athletic administrative assistant.  The position is largely funded by the NCAA Ethnic Minority and Women's Enhancement Internship Program.  Mitchelson began her appointment August 16.

"I'm very excited to hopefully bring the same intensity to a Division III program similar to my playing days in the ACC," said Mitchelson. "I'm honored to have the chance to learn coaching the collegiate game at W&L, and to have the chance to share my own diverse ideas with the University.  I'm very fortunate that the NCAA is providing me with this opportunity."

"Dean'na Mitchelson brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience to our women's basketball program," said Walsh.  "We look forward to her being a big part of our administrative staff in addition to the contributions she will make to our women's basketball players.  We also thank the NCAA for making this opportunity available to Dean'na and our department."

Mitchelson comes to W&L from Robert E. Lee High School in Staunton, Va., where she served as the head women's basketball coach during the 2003-04 season.  She has also been an intern coaching assistant at the University of Virginia for the 2002-03 season and was an assistant women's basketball coach at Monticello and Covenant Christian High Schools during the 2001-02 school year.

"We are very pleased to have someone of Dean'na's caliber joining our coaching staff," said W&L Head Coach Mandy King.  "She brings a wealth of enthusiasm, knowledge and experience to W&L women's basketball.  She
will be a great asset to our players and program."

Mitchelson is a 2002 graduate of the University of Virginia where she earned a bachelor of arts degree in anthropology with a minor in sociology.  She also holds a conditional teaching license in special education from Liberty University.

Mitchelson was a four-year letterwinner for the Cavaliers' women's basketball team, serving as a team tri-captain during the 2000-01 season.
