Returns to Alma Mater as Offensive Coordinator

Bert O'Neal

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee athletic director Mike Walsh has announced the appointment of Bert O'Neal as football offensive coordinator and assistant professor of physical education. O'Neal began his duties effective July 1.

"I am excited and honored to come back to Washington and Lee," said O'Neal. Every coach always thinks about returning and coaching at their alma mater. I'm excited to be a part of the tradition again and I am very much looking forward to adding to it. I couldn't be happier about this move."

"We are pleased to welcome Bert O'Neal back to Washington and Lee football," said Walsh. "He made an outstanding contribution as a player before injuries shortened his career. He then turned his attention to coaching and assisted at W&L for two years and then two more working directly with the quarterbacks at Auburn. He brings enthusiasm, energy and a love of football to our staff that will benefit our players and program."

As a graduate assistant coach at Auburn University since the summer of 2002, O'Neal assisted the Tigers' coaching staff in all aspects of daily operations, including scouting reports, film breakdown, game plans, recruiting and travel organization. He worked directly with the team's quarterbacks and helped lead the Tigers to a pair of victories over Alabama and bowl victories over Penn State (2002 Capital One Bowl) and Wisconsin (2003 Music City Bowl).

O'Neal, 24, graduated from Washington and Lee in 2002 with a bachelor of arts degree in English. A three-year letterwinner and a team captain as a senior, O'Neal played quarterback as a freshman and wide receiver as a sophomore when he caught 14 passes for 151 yards. After injuries ended his playing career, O'Neal spent his final two seasons assisting the Generals' coaching staff as a student assistant coach, working with both the offense and defense.
