W&L WRESTLING NAMED TO 2005 NWCA SCHOLAR ALL-AMERICA
TEAM
LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team
was one of 20 Division III teams named to the 2005 National Wrestling
Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-America Team. Additionally, sophomore
184-pounder Max Courtney (Jeffersonville, Pa.) was honored as an NWCA
Scholar All-American. The Generals ranked 12th in Division III with a 3.229 grade-point
average. Milwaukee School of Engineering was tops in the nation with a
3.603 GPA and the rest of the top five were the University of Dubuque
(3.418), Wesleyan University (3.38), Wabash College (3.354) and St. John's
University (3.334). Courtney, a mathematics and chemistry major, was one of
10 wrestlers in the 184-pound weight class who was named a Scholar All-American.
Courtney accumulated a 3.762 GPA during the fall semester and has an overall
GPA of 3.794. Courtney finished the season with a 15-11 overall record,
an 8-1 mark in dual meets and a perfect 3-0 record in the Centennial Conference.
He led the team with five pins and 14 reversals, while amassing 16 escapes,
14 takedowns and 10 near falls. W&L finished its season with a 5-4 overall record and
