FOUR W&L WOMEN'S TENNIS PLAYERS EARN ALL-AMERICA
ACCOLADES
LEXINGTON, Va. -- The NCAA Championship runner-up Washington
and Lee women's tennis team had four players earn All-America accolades
in 2005. Senior Lindsay Hagerman (Wichita Falls, Texas/Highland Park)
garnered All-America honors in both singles and doubles, while sophomores
Emily Applegate (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud), Kristen McClung (Charleston,
W.Va./Charleston Catholic), and Ginny Wortham (Richmond, Va./Collegiate)
notched All-America honors in doubles. Hagerman, who was also named ODAC Player of the Year and
ITA Atlantic South Region and National Senior Player of the Year, earned
All-America honors in singles for the fourth time in her career and third
time in doubles. She became the first-ever W&L women's tennis player
to win the NCAA Singles Championship after she defeated DePauw's Liz Bondi,
5-7, 6-3, 6-2, in the finals. Hagerman captured the ITA Division III National
Singles Championships this past fall and was the ITA Co-National Rookie
of the Year in 2002. Hagerman finished the season with a single-season
record 37 wins (37-1) and also holds the W&L all-time record for singles
(117-17) and doubles (108-17) victories. Applegate, who won the ODAC Championship at No. 3 singles
and No. 2 doubles in her first season as a General, advanced to the semifinals
of the NCAA Doubles Championship with McClung to earn All-America accolades.
Applegate, a two-time ODAC Player of the Week, was also named the ITA
Atlantic South Region Player to Watch and finished the season with a 15-1
singles record and a 17-3 mark in doubles. McClung, who claimed the ODAC Championship at No. 2 singles
and doubles, advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship
with Applegate to earn All-America honors. McClung ended the season with
a 17-3 singles record and an 18-5 mark in doubles. Wortham, who captured the ODAC Championship at No. 4 singles
and No. 1 doubles, notched All-America honors for the second time in her
career by teaming with Hagerman and advancing to the NCAA Doubles Championship
semifinals. Worthham concluded the season with a 19-4 singles record and
a 20-6 mark in doubles. Washington and Lee finished the season with a 22-1 record
(10-0 ODAC) and a runner-up finish at the NCAA Division III National Championships
for the second time in the last three seasons. --GENERALS--
