Will Coach the Generals' Defensive Line

Cleive Adams

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee athletic director Mike Walsh has announced the appointment of Cleive Adams as assistant football coach and assistant professor of physical education. Adams will begin his duties effective July 18.

"We are pleased to have Cleive Adams join our athletic department and football staff," said Walsh. "He has proven to be a top-flight defensive line coach at Ferrum and is genuinely interested in the lives of his athletes beyond the playing field. He brings experience and great energy and enthusiasm to the position."

"I am honored to have the opportunity to coach at an outstanding institution like Washington and Lee," said Adams. "I am pleased about the challenges of working with a new staff and players. I plan to match and exceed the enthusiasm and commitment I had during my tenure at Ferrum College. My family and I are excited about the possibilities of relocating to a new area and becoming active within the community."

Adams replaces Jeff Stickley on the coaching staff after Stickley's position as W&L's baseball coach was elevated to a stand-alone position. Adams will coach the Generals' defensive line.

Adams had served as an assistant coach at Ferrum College since the 1998 season, helping lead the Panthers to a pair of USA South Conference titles. He began as a defensive secondary coach then moved to defensive line prior to the 2002 season. During the 2004 season, Adams served as Ferrum's defensive coordinator and special teams coach.

In addition to his coaching duties, Adams has also served as the team's strength and conditioning coordinator since 2003. Additionally, he has been an academic counselor with the school's freshman mentoring program and has been a student activities manager.

Adams graduated from Ferrum in 2002 with a bachelor of science degree in recreation and leisure and a minor in psychology. He lettered as a defensive back for the Panther's 1988 South Region Championship team.
