W&L's PATTY ROBERTS NAMED A COCA-COLA COMMUNITY ALL-AMERICAN
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Recent Washington and Lee graduate Patty Roberts (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) is one of seven athletes nationwide to be selected as a Coca-Cola Community All-American as chosen by the Coca-Cola Company and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA).
Roberts will receive her award during the James J. Corbett Awards Luncheon at NACDA's 41st Annual Convention in New Orleans on June 21.
The Coca-Cola Community All-Americans program is used to recognize and celebrate the student-athletes whose service embodies the American spirit of generosity and volunteerism. Student-Athletes are nominated by each institution based on their volunteer experiences, athletic accomplishments and academic standing. In addition to receiving an award, each honoree also receives a $5,000 donation from the Coca-Cola Company to present to their community/philanthropic cause of choice.
Winners are selected from NCAA Division I-A, Division I-AA, Division I-AAA, Division II, Division III, NAIA and Junior/Community College. The 2006 winners are Garrett Johnson of Florida State (Division I-A), Steve Hutcheson of Iona College (Division I-AA), Kara Vaneck of Boston University (Division I-AAA), Katie Hensley of Emporia State (Division II), Roberts, Jenna Kreikemeier of College of St. Mary (NAIA) and Anthony Robinson of West Hills College (JC/CC).
A four-year letterwinner for the W&L women's tennis team and a team captain for the 2006 NCAA Division III runner-up team, Roberts has donated her $5,000 check to Project Horizon, a non-profit agency dedicated to reducing domestic, dating, and sexual violence in the Lexington, Buena Vista, and Rockbridge County area through crisis intervention services and prevention programs.
A 2006 graduate with majors in psychology and studio art, Roberts was a Bonner Leader which involves 900 hours of community service in a two-year period. She worked with Project Horizon, Rockbridge Area Hospice, Rockbridge Area Community Service Board and the Natural Bridge Juvenile Correction Center. She also volunteered with the Stonewall Jackson Hospital, Head Start, Nabors Service League and the Salvation Army.
During her tennis career, Roberts helped the Generals to three NCAA Division III runner-up finishes and four ODAC titles. She posted a 31-5 singles record and a 27-4 doubles mark and was named a semifinalist for the Coach John Wooden Citizen Cup earlier this year.
