Both Squads Garner Every First-Place Vote

Junior Emily Applegate

SALEM, Va. -- The Old Dominion Athletic Conference released its preseason coaches polls for men's and women's tennis on Thursday afternoon and both W&L teams were picked to win the league.

The W&L women garnered all 11 first-place votes and will be gunning for their fourth straight ODAC crown this spring. The W&L men received all 10 first-place tallies and will be pursuing their 11th straight conference championship.

The women are coming off a 22-1 campaign which saw them advance to the NCAA Division III Championship match last season. A trio of All-Americans return in juniors Emily Applegate (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud), Kristen McClung (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) and Ginny Wortham (Richmond, Va./Collegiate). Applegate and McClung teamed up during the fall season to finish fourth at the ITA Small College Championships. Applegate also placed sixth in the singles competition at the ITA Championships.

The W&L men posted a 16-6 record last season and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth straight season. Senior David Shay (Martinez, Ga./Augusta Prep) returns after garnering All-America honors in doubles last season and in singles as a sophomore. He enters the spring with a 64-24 career singles record and a 41-23 career doubles mark.

The W&L women open their spring season on Wednesday as they host Lynchburg College for a 6:30 pm contest. The men begin their spring schedule with a 5:30 pm match at the University of Richmond this Friday evening.
