Former UVa. Captain to Lead Generals' Program

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee athletic director Mike Walsh has announced the appointment of Amy Reistrup as the school's Equestrian Coach, replacing Carolyn Hedrick-Williams who resigned in July to spend more time with her family.

"We are very pleased to have Amy as our riding coach," said Walsh. "She brings a wealth of national and international experience to our program. I am certain that our riding program will greatly benefit from her coaching abilities and passion for equitation."

"I am looking forward to coaching the Washington and Lee riding team," said Reistrup. "I think it is an up-and-coming program."

Reistrup is a professional rider from Collierstown, Va. Since 1998, she has regularly competed against the world's top riders in Grand Prix events and won the Budweiser Grand Prix de Penn National in 1999.

A 1985 graduate of the University of Virginia with a degree in psychology, Reistrup captained the school's equestrian team as a junior and senior. She was a four-time qualifier for the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) and Affiliated National Riding Commission (ANRC) championships each of her four years, winning the ANRC individual and team championships in 1984 and 1985.

Reistrup joined the Virginia riding staff shortly after graduation and then moved on the coach at Southern Seminary College in 1990, working with the eight-time IHSA National Champions for three years.

Reistrup and her husband, Gordon, own and operate the AYR Show Stable where they purchase and train show horses.

The Washington and Lee and Lee riding team opens its 2005-06 season on September 25 as it competes at the Radford Invitational.
