Applegate Named Player of the Year

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee placed four players on the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association (VaSID) College Division All-State Women's Tennis team, which was announced on Wednesday afternoon.

Additionally, senior Emily Applegate (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) was named the Player of the Year and Head Coach Cinda Rankin was selected the Coach of the Year. Virginia Wesleyan's Imee Bautista was tabbed the Rookie of the Year.

Applegate was selected to the first team and is joined by senior Ginny Wortham (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and sophomore Katie Tabb (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina). Senior Kristen McClung (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) was picked to the second team.

Applegate was the 2007 NCAA Division III Singles Runner-up and she completed the season with a 17-2 singles record and a 16-4 doubles mark. She won the 2006 Division III Singles Championship and was a five-time All-American. The two-time ODAC Player of the Year, Applegate finished her career with a 65-6 singles record and a 58-14 doubles mark.

Wortham was a four-time All-ODAC honoree, three-time All-American and the recipient of the 2007 ODAC Marjorie Berkley Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award as the conference's top female scholar-athlete. A 2007 ESPN The Magazine Third Team Academic All-American, she finished the season with a 19-6 singles record and a 23-4 doubles record. For her career, Wortham posted an 88-19 (.822) singles record and a 97-21 (.822) doubles record. Her 88 singles victories rank sixth all-time at W&L, while her 97 doubles wins are tied for third.

Tabb was a First Team All-ODAC selection each of the past two seasons and was an All-American in both singles and doubles in 2006. She finished this season with a 19-5 singles record and a 22-4 doubles mark.

McClung earned All-America honors in doubles this spring and completed her career as a four-time All-ODAC and four-time All-America honoree. She went 10-1 in singles and 15-3 in doubles during the 2006-07 season and completed her career with a 66-13 singles mark and a 70-25 doubles record.

Rankin adds her Coach of the Year honor to a list that already includes ODAC Coach of the Year, ITA Atlantic South Region Coach of the Year and Wilson/ITA National Coach of the Year accolades. She guided the Generals to a 25-1 overall record en route to winning the program's first-ever National Championship. In her 19th year at the helm of the Generals, Rankin has logged a 381-57 (.870) career record, has won 17 ODAC titles and has led W&L to 13-straight NCAA Quarterfinal appearances.
