Will Also Coach the Generals' Defensive Backs

Cleive Adams

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee Head Football Coach Frank Miriello has announced that Cleive Adams has been promoted from defensive line and special teams coach to defensive coordinator. Adams replaces Brian Newberry, who recently accepted a coaching position at Elon University.

"Cleive has been a member of our coaching staff for two wonderful years and we are pleased to be able to offer him this promotion," said Miriello. "His work ethic, attention to detail and enthusiasm for coaching and teaching has allowed him to earn the respect of the players and coaching staff. He is very deserving of being our defensive coordinator."

Adams has spent the last two seasons as the Generals' defensive line and special teams coach, helping W&L rank among the top defenses in the ODAC both seasons. The 2006 squad ranked ninth in Division III in passing efficiency defense (86.3 rating), 15th in turnovers forced (31), 51st in scoring defense (15.7 ppg) and 53rd in total defense (261.6 ypg).

"I am excited about the opportunity to serve as the defensive coordinator at Washington and Lee," said Adams. "Coach Newberry did an outstanding job of coaching the defense the past three seasons and his will be some huge shoes to fill. I feel that my defensive philosophies are very similar and I hope that we can pick up right where we left off last season. I'm excited to begin working with the players and can't wait for the season to begin."

Adams arrived at W&L in July of 2005 after seven seasons as an assistant coach at Ferrum College. During his time with the Panthers, Adams helped the team win a pair of USA South Conference titles. He graduated from Ferrum in 2002 with a bachelor of science degree in recreation and leisure and a minor in psychology. Adams lettered as a defensive back for the Panther's 1988 South Region Championship team.

W&L will begin a search shortly to hire a defensive assistant coach. The Generals return 14 starters from the 2006 team that went 7-4 overall, won the program's first conference title since 1985, and advanced to the NCAA Division III playoffs for the first time.
