W&L NAMES NEW ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT ASSISTANTS
LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee Interim Director of Athletics Chuck O'Connell has announced the hiring of Casey Dale, Mike Ginder, Tiffany Underhill and Ryan Wellner as assistant coaches within the department.
Dale will serve as an assistant coach for the six-time defending ODAC Champion volleyball team. He comes to W&L from Juniata College, where he received a bachelor of science in Elementary and Special Education this spring. Dale was a member of three National Championship men's volleyball teams at Juniata and served as an assistant coach for the women's volleyball team his final two years. During that time, he helped lead the Eagles to an NCAA runner-up finish in 2005 and an NCAA National Championship in 2006.
Ginder will aid the men's and women's swimming programs after a stellar career with the W&L men's swimming team. A 2007 Washington and Lee graduate with a bachelor of science in business administration, Ginder was a four-year letterwinner and a team captain as a senior. A four-time First Team All-Bluegrass Mountain Conference selection and two-time BMC Co-Swimmer of the Year, Ginder helped the Generals to four conference titles during his career. He qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships all four seasons and earned All-America honors a staggering 16 times, just one shy of the school's all-time record. Ginder received First Team All-America laurels 10 times in six different events and graduates holding three individual school records and as a member of five record-holding relay teams. He was named the W&L Outstanding Freshman Male Athlete in 2004 and the W&L Outstanding Senior Male Athlete this spring.
Underhill will undertake the assistant coaching position with the field hockey program. She comes to W&L from Keene State College, where she graduated with a bachelor of science in sport science in the fall of 2006. Underhill lettered in field hockey and softball at Keene State and was a team captain in both sports. She helped both teams to a pair of conference titles and was a first team all-conference selection in field hockey in 2005. Underhill served as a student assistant coach for the field hockey team in 2006 and helped guide the Owls to an 18-5 record and another conference championship.
Wellner will serve as an assistant coach for the men's lacrosse team. He comes to W&L from Stevens Institute of Technology, where he has served as an defensive coordinator for the past three seasons and helped lead the Ducks to a pair of NCAA Tournament berths. Wellner's defenses produced a pair of All-America defensemen and have ranked among the Top 10 in Division III in scoring defense. A 2000 graduate of Mary Washington with a bachelor of science in business management, Wellner also served as an assistant coach at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (2004) and Chaminade High School (2003), was the co-founder and director of the New York Lacrosse Academy and served as the Director of Operations for the National Lacrosse League from 2001-2003. He was a captain and four-year letterwinner for the lacrosse team at Mary Washington, earning the school's Outstanding Senior Award in 2000.
