W&L NAMES DAVID HANNA ASSISTANT FOOTBALL COACH
LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee Interim Athletic Director Chuck O'Connell has announced the appointment of David Hanna as assistant football coach and assistant professor of physical education. Hanna will begin his duties effective July 1.
"David Hanna is an impressive young man and someone that will serve as a fine mentor for our student-athletes," said O'Connell. "He understands the Division III philosophy from his time as a player at Kalamazoo and as a coach at Johns Hopkins and we welcome his detailed and enthusiastic coaching style."
Hanna comes to W&L from Johns Hopkins, where he served as the wide receivers coach for the past two seasons. During his time with the Blue Jays, the team went 13-8 overall, won the 2005 Centennial Conference title and advanced to the program's first NCAA Tournament. Additionally, Hanna coached wide receiver Anthony Triplin to Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2005 and First Team All-CC honors in 2006.
"Washington and Lee University is a world-class institution of higher learning where scholar-athletes come to develop skills that prepare them for an increasingly demanding world while competing at a very high level of intercollegiate athletics," said Hanna. "I am excited about joining the championship program built by Coach (Frank) Miriello and am looking forward to joining the W&L and Lexington communities. The players at W&L are intelligent, hard-working young men and I have high expectations for what we will be able to accomplish this season."
A 1999 graduate of Kalamazoo College with a bachelor of arts in psychology and a minor in sociology, Hanna was a two-time All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association selection for the Hornets' football team. He tied for the team lead with three interceptions as a senior strong safety and finished second on the team with 59 tackles. A four-year letterwinner, he also averaged 20.8 yards per kickoff return as a senior.
"Though David's coaching experience is limited, I'm excited about his growth potential," said Head Coach Frank Miriello. "He is highly motivated and places great emphasis on preparation and I'm sure that our student-athletes will learn much from his detailed approach to coaching."
After graduating from Kalamazoo, Hanna studied in the doctoral clinical psychology program at the University at Albany from 1999-2003 and he later served as a community investment specialist in the City of Baltimore's Office of the Mayor. He also served as Executive Director of the Bethel Outreach Center of the Bethel African American Methodist Episcopal Church.
Hanna will serve as the defensive backs coach, special teams coordinator, and video coordinator on the Generals' coaching staff. W&L returns its' entire defensive secondary from last season's ODAC Championship squad that participated in the NCAA Division III playoffs.
