W&L RECEIVES INTERCOLLEGIATE TENNIS ASSOCIATION AWARDS
SKILLMAN, N.J. -- The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released its 2006-07 regional award winners on Monday afternoon.
Washington and Lee Men's Tennis Coach David Detwiler and Women's Tennis Coach Cinda Rankin were both named the Atlantic South Region Coach of the Year for Division III. Additionally, senior Ginny Wortham (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) was selected as the recipient of the Division III Atlantic South Region ITA/Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sportsmanship Award.
All regional winners are eligible for the National ITA Awards, which will be announced on May 17 during the NCAA National Championships held at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va.
Detwiler received the men's Coach of the Year Award after guiding the Generals to a school-record 20 wins (20-3), their 12th-straight ODAC Championship and their seventh-straight NCAA Tournament berth. The 2007 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, Detwiler has led W&L to a 106-41 (.721) overall record during his seven seasons.
Rankin was named the women's Coach of the Year Award in leading the Generals to a 22-1 record thus far in 2006-07. The Generals won their fifth-straight conference title and have advanced to the NCAA Division III quarterfinals for the 13th-consecutive season. The two-time (1995, 2005) ITA Division III National Coach of the Year, Rankin has led W&L to four NCAA Division III Runner-up finishes and a 380-57 (.870) overall record over the past 19 seasons.
Wortham is a four-year letterwinner and a team captain this season. A four-time All-ODAC and three-time All-America honoree, she has recorded an 88-16 (.846) career singles record and a 94-21 (.817) career doubles mark. An ITA Academic All-American, Wortham ranks fourth all-time at W&L in doubles wins (94) and sixth in singles victories (88).
The Washington and Lee men's team completed the 2006-07 season with a 20-3 overall record after falling to Johns Hopkins (5-1) in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The W&L women are 22-1 overall and face Middlebury in the NCAA Quarterfinals on Tuesday at 2:00 pm.
