W&L NAMES TOMMY LAURENDINE ASSISTANT FOOTBALL COACH
LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee Interim Athletic Director Chuck O'Connell has announced the appointment of Tommy Laurendine as assistant football coach and assistant professor of physical education. Laurendine will begin his duties effective July 1.
"It is my pleasure to welcome Tommy Laurendine back to the coaching staff at Washington and Lee," said O'Connell. "His experience will bring stability to the staff and his experience as an offensive coordinator will be beneficial to our entire team, but especially to the offensive side of the ball."
Laurendine served as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator for the Generals from 1995-96, helping lead W&L to a 10-8-1 overall record. Most recently, he was the offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach at the University of West Georgia for the 2006 season.
"I'm excited to return to Washington and Lee and work with members of the coaching staff there once again," said Laurendine. "The two years that I spent coaching at W&L were among the most enjoyable of my career because of the quality of the student-athlete that you have the opportunity to coach. They are not worried about scholarships and have no egos and that was always enjoyable to be around."
Laurendine has also been an offensive coordinator at Southern Arkansas University, where he served as an assistant coach from 2000-2006, and at the University of West Alabama (1997-2000). In six seasons as offensive coordinator, he guided the Southern Arkansas offense to 18 school records, several national statistical rankings and an NCAA Division II Tournament berth in 2003. Laurendine coached the quarterbacks and offensive line at Southern Arkansas and directed the quarterbacks and fullbacks at West Alabama.
"I am extremely excited about Tommy's return to our program," said W&L Head Coach Frank Miriello. "He coached our quarterbacks and wide receivers his first season at W&L and was promoted to offensive coordinator during his second season. He did a superb job with the offense, was well respected by the players and was a valuable asset to the program. Tommy has always been, and remains, a student of the game. He has accumulated a wealth of experience since his departure and we are very happy that he and his family will be re-joining the W&L community."
Laurendine began his coaching career in 1990 as a student assistant coach at his alma mater, Lenoir-Rhyne College. He later served as a graduate assistant coach at West Georgia from 1991-93, earning a master of education in physical education, and was the co-offensive coordinator at Northwest Whitfield High School in Dalton, Ga., from 1994-95.
Laurendine earned two letters as a member of the football team at Appalachian State University before transferring to Lenoir-Rhyne, where he earned a bachelor of arts in education in 1990. Laurendine received two letters at Lenoir-Rhyne, garnering South Atlantic Conference Offensive Player of the Year honors both seasons. He was named a finalist for the 1989 Domino's NAIA Player of the Year Award and is a 2007 inductee to the South Atlantic Conference Hall of Fame.
