Takes Position at Division I-AA Elon College

Brian Newberry

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Brian Newberry has resigned the position of assistant football coach at Washington and Lee University to accept an assistant coaching position at Elon College.

The Generals defensive coordinator for the past three seasons, Newberry will serve as the defensive backs coach at Elon.

"I can't say enough about the student-athletes, coaches, and support staff that I have worked with at W&L," said Newberry. "I am thankful for the opportunity to coach at W&L and grateful for the many friendships that I have made. I am extremely proud of what we have accomplished in the last three years. The achievements are a direct reflection of the hard work and commitment put forth by an outstanding group of players and coaches that I feel privileged to have worked with. W&L will always hold a special place in my heart. While I am saddened to leave a wonderful place and to part ways with such a great group of people, I am thrilled about the opportunity to coach at Elon University."

Newberry was in his second stint with the Generals, having served as the defensive backs coach for the 2001 and 2002 seasons before spending the 2003 season at Lehigh University. He returned prior to the 2004 season as defensive coordinator and helped lead W&L to a 20-11 overall record and an ODAC Championship this fall.

"We thank Brian for his hard work with Washington and Lee and our student-athletes," said W&L Interim Athletic Director Chuck O'Connell. "Brian did a fine job of coaching and we wish him well in his new position."

Newberry's 2004 defense produced a school-record 43 sacks and ranked among the Division III leaders in rushing defense. His 2005 defense led the ODAC in pass defense, rush defense and scoring defense, while his 2006 defense forced 30 turnovers and ranked among the national leaders in pass defense.

"We were pleased to get Brian back following his year at Lehigh and he has done outstanding work with our defensive secondary and the defense as a whole as our coordinator," said W&L Head Coach Frank Miriello. "We will miss Brian and wish him the best as he continues to climb the coaching ladder."

Newberry begins his appointment at Elon immediately. A search for his replacement at W&L will begin shortly.
