THREE W&L ATHLETES EARN PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS
SALEM, Va. -- Washington and Lee garnered the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Football Defensive Player of Week, Volleyball Player of the Week and the Player of the Week for men's soccer for the week ending October 22.
Junior cornerback Jimmy Gift (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) received the nod as the Defensive Football Player of the Week, while senior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) was tabbed as Volleyball Player of the Week. Junior midfielder Travis Short (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill) was selected as the Player of the Week for men's soccer.
Gift, who returned an interception 73 yards for a score, led a W&L defensive secondary that shutdown the nation's top passing offense as the Generals downed Guilford, 34-12, for the Blue and White's sixth-straight win. He also racked up eight tackles (seven solo) and four pass breakups in the win. Gift was also named the ODAC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against Randolph-Macon, a game in which he returned a fumble 55 yards for a touchdown.
Edmonson earns Player of the Week honors as the W&L volleyball team improved to 21-6 overall and 9-0 in the ODAC. In a 3-0 win over Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday, she amassed a team-best 23 digs, while in a 3-1 win over Bridgewater on Saturday, she tied her own school record with 33 digs.
Short tallied three scores on the week as the W&L men's soccer team shutout both Emory and Henry and Randolph-Macon. In the 4-0 victory over the Wasps, Short notched a pair of goals less than five minutes apart. He also added a goal in the 4-0 win over R-MC.
