JOEL SHINOFIELD TAKES OVER AS AQUATICS DIRECTOR AT W&L
LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee athletic director Mike Walsh has announced that head men's swimming coach Joel Shinofield will be assuming the duties of aquatics director. Shinofield replaces former head women's swimming coach Kiki Jacobs who recently resigned to accept the Associate Athletic Director position at Oberlin College. Shinofield will begin his duties immediately.
"It is a pleasure to be able to reward the aquatics director position to a successful coach like Joel," said Walsh. "He has established himself as a terrific coach and fine colleague at Washington and Lee."
As aquatics director, Shinofield will be responsible for maintaining the Cy Twombly Pool, including scheduling athletics practices and user groups. He is also in charge of training and scheduling lifeguards and overseeing the University's spring swimming lesson program for community youth.
"I am excited to build upon the foundation that Kiki Jacobs has established for Washington and Lee aquatics," noted Shinofield. "I look forward to serving the users of our pool and in helping the intercollegiate teams in any way possible."
A 1994 Washington and Lee graduate, Shinofield returned to W&L in the spring of 2003 after serving in a variety of positions, including executive director/head coach of the Richfield Swim Club, head water polo coach at Macalester College and volunteer assistant women's swimming coach at the University of Minnesota.
In his three seasons with the Generals, he has posted a 19-3 overall mark and won three straight Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championships. Additionally, he has guided W&L to a pair of Top 20 finishes at the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships during the last three seasons, while also mentoring 19 Generals to multiple All-Bluegrass Mountain Conference honors and eight W&L swimmers to multiple All-America accolades.
Shinofield, a three-time BMC Coach of the Year selection, has seen his swimmers establish new school records in 10 events during his three seasons.
