Men Enter NSCAA/adidas Poll at No. 25, Women Move Up to No. 18

Junior Jack Palmer

Sophomore Anne Van Devender

MISSION, Kan. -- The Washington and Lee University men's and women's soccer teams were both ranked in the October 3rd edition of the Division III NSCAA/adidas Poll. The men were ranked at No. 25, while the women's squad moves to No. 18.

For the men, this is their first national ranking since being tabbed 24th during the 2001 season. The women received their first national ranking of 2006 last week, entering the poll at the 21st spot before jumping to 18th in this week's edition.

Previously unranked, the men's team owns an 8-0 (3-0 ODAC) record in 2006, which is the best start in program history. The Generals are led by junior forward Jack Palmer (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown), who has six goals and one assist, and junior goalkeeper Ted Sheedy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel), who has a 0.29 goals-against-average and a .913 save percentage.

The women's team is unbeaten through nine games this season and is one of two teams in the nation that has yet to allow a goal. The Generals claim an 8-0-1 record overall and lead the ODAC with a 5-0-1 record in conference play. Sophomore forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) is W&L's points leader with 35 (14 g, 7 a), while senior forward Anne Wiltshire (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) has notched 24 points on 10 goals and four assists.

Both teams continue their 2006 campaigns on Wednesday at 4 pm. The men square off against cross-town rival, Division I, Virginia Military Institute at Patchin Field, while the women host Guilford at Watt Field.
