LEXINGTON, Va. - Washington and Lee University has hired former Boston College assistant coach John McGregor as its new running backs coach, completing head coach Frank Miriello's staff for the 1997 season. McGregor replaces Dick Cerone, a 1982 W&L graduate who coached for six years and left earlier this month to take a job at Wabash (Ind.) College as offensive line and head baseball coach.
Also joining Miriello's staff is Allan Gerber, a 1988 graduate of Trenton State College (now the College of New Jersey). Gerber has nine years of coaching experience, including four at the college level. Gerber coached at VMI from 1993-94, at North Greenville College in 1995 and at Gardner-Webb University in 1996. Gerber replaces Tommy Laurendine who is now the offensive coordinator at the University of West Alabama. Gerber will coach W&L's quarterbacks and wide receivers.
McGregor has extensive coaching experience at the professional, collegiate and secondary school level. He spent the past three years as running backs coach at Boston College under former Eagles' head coach Dan Henning. McGregor was also an assistant under Henning with the Atlanta Falcons in 1986. More recently, he coached professionally in Europe as head coach of the Berlin Fire and the Helsinki Roosters and he was also an assistant with the National Team of Finland in 1991. McGregor also served as an assistant coach of the Albany Firebirds of the Arena Football League in 1990 and as head coach of the Richmond Ravens in the Continental Football League in 1987 and 1988.
In addition to his collegiate experience at Boston College he coached at Ohio University (1988-90) and Florida State (1968-70). McGregor has also coached in the high school ranks for a number of years, including a 10-year stint at William Fleming High School in Roanoke from 1976-85.
McGregor graduated from Memphis State in 1961 and also holds a master's degree from Florida State.
