The 1997-98 athletic season at Washington and Lee University officially gets underway this week when the men's soccer team travels to Winchester for a nonconference game at Shenandoah University on Thursday. The Generals won a school-record 12 games last season and advanced to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship game.

All six of W&L's fall sports teams will be in action over the weekend, highlighted by home contests for women's soccer and volleyball. The volleyball team hosts the seventh annual W&L Invitational beginning Friday afternoon at 4:00. Play will continue Saturday morning beginning at 9:00. The Generals are coming off of a 29-4 season and have won this tournament the last two years. The women's soccer team hosts Kenyon on Saturday at 1:00 and then begins ODAC play by hosting Randolph-Macon Woman's College on Sunday at 2:00.

Taking to the road this weekend will be the cross country, football and men's soccer teams. The men's cross country team opens its season at the University of Virginia Invitational. A strong senior class will be looking to capture its third ODAC championship in the last four years. The women's cross country team begins defense of its ODAC championship by running at the Lebanon Valley Invitational on Saturday. The football team heads to Baltimore to renew its rivalry with Johns Hopkins on Saturday at 1:30. W&L is coming off of a 5-5 season and looking to post its fourth straight .500 or better season. Finally, the men's soccer team will play its second contest at Catholic on Saturday at 1:00.
