LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee University senior women's lacrosse players Mary Jo Mahoney and Whitney Parker have been named to the College Lacrosse USA Division III preseason All-America team. Parker was named to the second team and Mahoney was an honorable mention selection.
Parker, a native of Richmond, Va. and a 1995 graduate of St. Catherine's, has started all 45 games since she's been at Washington and Lee and earned second team USWLA All-America honors last year. Parker, one of the team's top defensive players, scored 21 goals and also earned first team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference, All-State and All-South honors last year. Parker was a second team All-ODAC and All-South selection in 1996. Off the field she serves on the council of W&L's Student Athlete Mentor program and is a biology major.
Mahoney is a native of Severna Park, Md. and a 1995 graduate of Severna Park High School who now lives in Andover, Massachusetts. Mahoney will be entering her fourth year as a starter and is coming off a season in which she scored 20 goals and led the team with 60 ground balls to earn first team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference, All-State and All-South honors. Mahoney, recently inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, served as the junior class president at W&L and currently served as the Student Judicial Committee chair. She has also been inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership fraternity, and is a business administration and accounting major.
Washington and Lee finished the 1997 season with a 12-4 record and was ranked eighth in the final Division III coaches poll of the season. The Generals return 10 starters from that team and open the 1998 season at home against Guilford on March 4.
