W&L Women's Tennis Enjoys Another Fine Season

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee women's tennis players Brook Hartzell (Palo Alto, Calif./ Branson School) and Melissa Hatley (Columbia, S.C./ Heathwood Hall) have been honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association for their tremendous 1999 campaigns. Hartzell, a junior, received the Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship/ Leadership Award, representing the south region. Also representing the south region, Hatley was named Rookie of the Year.

Hartzell currently has a record of 24-4 and will be representing the Generals in this weekend's NCAA Singles Championships in Ewing, N.J. Hatley finished 1999 with a singles record of 18-6. Together, they have accumulated a doubles record of 14-5. As ODAC champions, they will compete in the NCAA Doubles Championships this weekend.

The Generals finished this season with a record of 17-5 and reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament, making their sixth straight appearance. They also won the ODAC Championship for the ninth consecutive season.
