W&L's MENTZ AND BURGHARDT EARN ALL-ODAC HONORS Mentz in Rookie of the Year and a Second Team Pick; Burghardt is Honorable MentionSALEM, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's basketball team was honored on Wednesday evening when freshman center Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) was named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year. She also garnered second team All-ODAC honors. Senior forward Chrissy Burghardt (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) earned honorable mention honors. Mentz was the first rookie of the year and first or second team all-league member in the history of the program.
Mentz has had a fine initial season with the Generals, leading the team in scoring (15.4 ppg.) and field goal percentage (.584). She is currently second in rebounding (8.1 rpg.). During the course of the season, Mentz has set school records for points in a game (30 vs. Lynchburg on Jan. 28) and points in a season (385).
Burghardt, the team's lone senior, earned honorable mention honors for the second-straight season after leading the team in rebounding (8.7 rpg.). She is also second on the team in scoring (11.0 ppg.).
Earlier this season, Burghardt became the school's all-time leading scorer and is the first player to ever score over 1,000 career points. She currently stands at 1,074 career points.
W&L is enjoying one of its finest seasons ever, posting a 13-12 overall record, 11-9 in the ODAC. The 13 wins are a program-best as are the 11 conference wins.
The Generals are currently competing in the ODAC Tournament and have reached the Tournament semifinals with their first-ever tournament win, a 61-49 victory over fourth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan on Thursday evening. The fifth seed, W&L now plays top seeded Randolph-Macon on Friday, Feb. 26 at 1:00 pm. The tournament winner receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
