LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee Men's Tennis Team has recently been named to the 1998-99 Academic All-American Team by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). The squad also had two team members honored as ITA Division III Scholar-Athletes. The individuals receiving the award were Scott Babka (Little Silver, NJ/Christian Brothers), and David Lehman (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery).
To be honored as an Academic All-American Team, Washington and Lee was required to compile a cumulative team GPA of 3.2 or above. W&L was one of only 11 Division III schools receiving this award. The Generals proved themselves as powerful on the court as they were in the classroom, winning their 14th ODAC Championship in the past 15 years.
Babka, a 1999 graduate, was a four-year letterman and team co-captain this past season. As a senior, Babka teamed with Dale Pretila to win the ODAC Championship at No. 1 doubles. Babka also captured the No. 3 singles flight at the ODAC Championships two years in a row.
Lehman, who also graduated this spring, was the Generals other co-captain. At the ODAC Championships in April, Lehman easily swept through his competition to win the No. 5 singles flight. Lehman, a business administration and accounting major, is a recipient of the 1999 William McHenry Scholar Athlete Award at W&L.
