GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The College Division GTE Academic All-District III At-Large Team was released on Wednesday afternoon and Washington and Lee had two student-athletes honored.
Senior swimmer James Browne (Toronto, Ont./Univ. of Toronto) earned the honor after an outstanding year in both the pool and the classroom. Browne carries a 4.0 GPA as a chemistry major and has captained the swim team for two years. He was an honorable mention CSCAA Academic All-American last year after helping tie the school-record in the 200-freestyle relay. In addition, Browne is a three-time ODAC and W&L student-athlete honoree.
Junior wrestler Josh Chamberlain (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) was also named to the squad after a stellar wrestling season in which he went 16-7 and earned runner-up honors in the Centennial Conference 149-pound classification. Last year he was honored as a Division III Wrestling Coaches Association Academic All-American. Chamberlain carries a 3.91 GPA as a philosophy major.
The District III team is composed of 10 members from throughout the southeastern United States. Other than Washington and Lee, only Emory University and the University of North Florida had multiple athletes honored. With their selections to the All-District Team, both Browne and Chamberlain are automatically entered into consideration for Academic All-American status.
