LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team is experiencing a dream season after completing the 1999 campaign with a 22-6 record and an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championship.
The Generals went through the season with a perfect 10-0 conference record for the second straight year and received their first-ever bid to the NCAA Tournament. In the process, three members of the team were honored for having oustanding seasons.
Sophomore middle blocker Lindsay Ruckert (Metairie, La./Sacred Heart) followed up First Team All-ODAC, ODAC Rookie of the Year, and ODAC Tournament MVP honors in 1998 with First Team All-ODAC, ODAC Player of the Year, and ODAC Tournament MVP laurels this season. Ruckert led the team with a school-record 398 kills, a .339 hitting percentage, 50 aces, and 98 blocks. She was also third on the team with 288 digs.
Senior outside hitter Nancy Reinhart (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart) had a record-breaking season in which she broke the ODAC marks for career kills (1,299) and digs (1,500). The 1997 ODAC Player of the Year, Reinhart was named First Team All-ODAC for the third straight year after tallying 311 kills, 37 aces, and a school-record 418 digs. In all, Reinhart now holds 10 single-game, single-season, and career school records.
Sophomore outside hitter Lee Charbonnet (New Orleans, La./Benjamin Franklin) earned Second Team All-Conference honors after totaling 225 kills, 49 aces, 72 blocks, and 255 digs. Charbonnet, with two seasons remaining, is currently tied for fifth all-time at W&L with 121 career aces.
W&L will be in action in the NCAA Regional Tournament on Thursday, November 11 at 7:30 pm as it takes on Savannah College of Art and Design. The tournament is being held at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga.
