Batcheller, White, Holton, Fitzgibbons, Lipsey Earn First Team Honors, Baker Honorable Mention

LEXINGTON, Va. -- On Friday morning, the VaSID College Division All-State Football Team was announced and Washington and Lee had six players honored. The team is voted upon by members of the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association.

Senior quarterback Christian Batcheller (Stuart, Va./Patrick County), freshman tight end Davis White (Birmingham, Ala./Episcopal (Va.)), junior offensive lineman Colin Fitzgibbons (Dallas, Texas/Hillcrest), junior offensive lineman Justin Holton (Pittsburg, Texas/Pittsburg), and junior linebacker Jayson Lipsey (Longwood, Fla./Lake Brantley) were all first team selections. Junior defensive back Will Baker (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) was named to the honorable mention squad.

W&L and Randolph-Macon had the most players on the 26-member first team with five each. Bridgewater, Emory & Henry, and Virginia Union had four players honored, while Virginia State had two and Ferrum had one.

Virginia State wide receiver Damon Thompson and Virginia Union head coach Willard Bailey were named the Player of the Year and Coach of the Year.

Batcheller, an honorable mention All-State pick in 1998, completed 178-of-313 attempts for 2,273 yards and 15 touchdowns on the season. He was also named First Team All-ODAC in 1999.

White was W&L's second-leading receiver with 39 catches for 626 yards and six touchdowns. He earned Honorable Mention All-ODAC and Third Team All-South Region honors earlier this season.

Fitzgibbons and Holton anchored a W&L offensive line that paved the way for a school-record 384.7 yards of total offense per game and allowed just 12 sacks in 327 passing attempts. Fitzgibbons was a Second Team All-ODAC selection, while Holton was named First Team All-ODAC and Third Team All-South Region.

Lipsey led the ODAC with 105 total tackles and posted 25 tackles in a win over Bridgewater. He was named Second Team All-ODAC.

Baker earned honorable mention honors after totaling 89 tackles, two interceptions, and two fumble recoveries. He was a Second Team All-ODAC selection this season after earning First Team All-ODAC and All-State honors last year.

Washington and Lee finished the 1999 season with a 5-5 overall record, 3-3 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
