Nine Attain a 4.0 or Higher Grade-Point Average

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Mike Walsh has announced that 70 students earned Scholar-Athlete awards during the recently completed fall term. The students are all members of W&L athletic teams and achieved a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.500.

Additionally, nine of the students honored achieved grade point averages of 4.0 or higher (an A+ is worth 4.330 at W&L). Among the students achieving 4.0 or higher GPA's were junior men's swimming captain James Browne (Ontario, Canada/University of Toronto), sophomore football player Joel Fechisin (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren Regional), senior women's lacrosse player Lauren Francis (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown), senior volleyball player Lee Ann Gschwind (Islip, N.Y./Islip), sophomore golfer Nathan Hoot (Fort Worth, Texas/Trinity Valley), senior women's swimmer Jen Selder (Princeton, N.J./Lawrenceville), senior women's cross country captain Ashley Smith (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster), sophomore women's tennis player Jennifer Strawbridge (Houston, Texas/Westfield), and sophomore men's track athlete Patrick Wright (Arlington, Texas/Trinity Valley).

Other notable athletes to receive Scholar-Athlete awards included sophomore All-ODAC cross country runner Wendy Case (Cumberland Foreside, Maine/Greely), All-ODAC and All-State men's soccer player Sam Chase (Marietta, Ga./Walton), who is the leading scorer in school history, senior women's swimming captain Margaret Hoehl (Tullahoma, Tenn./Tullahoma), the 1997-98 ODAC/Atlantic States Swimmer of the Year, All-ODAC women's soccer player Ginny Jernigan (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips), and two-time All-ODAC volleyball player Nancy Reinhart (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart).

Fifteen of W&L's 21 varsity athletic programs achieved a team GPA of at least 3.000, led by the women's swimming team with a 3.309. The highest men's team GPA was men's swimming with a 3.237 and no team recorded a GPA lower than 2.869.

W&L had an outstanding fall season on the playing fields as well. W&L's six fall sports team combined for a record of 51-17-3 (.739) with the women's volleyball team capturing its second straight Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship.
