LEXINGTON, Va. -- Top-seeded Washington and Lee broke open a 10-8 lead with 11:23 remaining in the game with five unanswered goals and advanced to the ODAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament finals after a 15-8 victory over fourth-seeded Roanoke on Saturday afternoon at the Liberty Hall Fields.

The Generals exploded for three goals in the game's first 4:23 to claim a 3-0 lead. Freshman midfielder Lee Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) scored two goals in the stretch and finished the day with four scores. Roanoke cut the Generals' lead to 3-1 on a goal by senior defender Kylie Wernert (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) with 23:31 left in the first half. However, Wheeler and sophomore attacker Leslie Bogart (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) found the net 2:12 apart to give W&L (14-2) a 5-1 advantage.

Roanoke (8-8) trimmed the W&L lead to 5-3 after goals by junior midfielder Leslie Hunt (Baltimore, Md./Towson) and Wernert with 9:26 remaining in the first stanza. Washington and Lee fought right back with four goals to take a 9-3 halftime lead led by two scores from freshman midfielder Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle).

The Maroons scored four straight goals to open the second half to cut the W&L lead to just two. W&L's Bogart scored at the 21:18 mark to stretch the lead to 10-7, however, Hunt sliced the lead to two again with a goal at the 17:41 mark. The Generals then put the game away, scoring five unanswered goals to end the game.

W&L was led by Wheeler, and Taffe, who notched three goals. Bogart added two goals and one assist. Freshman goalie Joanna Perini (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) made 14 saves in the net for the Generals.

Wernert scored four goals to lead the Maroons, while Hunt netted a pair of goals. Sophomore goalie Lisa Humphries (Glasgow, Va./Rockbridge Co.) stopped 16 W&L shots. The Generals out-shot Roanoke, 34-24.

Washington and Lee will now meet third-seeded Lynchburg in the ODAC Championship game tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 pm.
