W&L WRESTLING FINISHES EIGHTH AT CENTENNIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
BALTIMORE, Md. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team finished eighth out of eight teams at the Centennial Conference Championships on Saturday afternoon at Johns Hopkins University. Ursinus College claimed the title with 98.5 points, followed by McDaniel (68), Muhlenberg (67.5), Johns Hopkins (55), Gettysburg (36.5), Stevens Tech (34), King’s Point (30.5) and W&L (14). The Generals were paced by freshman heavyweight John Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons), who finished third overall. Christopher was pinned by McDaniel’s Keith English (2:45) in the opening match, but recovered to defeated Chris Swensen of Muhlenberg (6-0) and John Brunetti of King’s Point (7-2), setting up a rematch with English in the third place match. This time, Christopher knocked off English by pinning him in 3:30. Freshman Tom Hosford (Stewart Manor, N.Y./Garden City) was the only other General to place, finishing fourth at 125 pounds. Hosford was pinned by Michael Sumner of Johns Hopkins (2:30) in his opening match then received a pair of byes to the third place match where he fell to Mike Tenenhaus of Muhlenberg, 7-1. The Generals’ season is now complete. The Generals fell to the host Mules, 27-9, then dropped a 43-3 decision to Ursinus College. In the loss to Muhlenberg (8-5, 6-2), sophomore Jesse Sataloff (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh), junior Max Courtney (Jeffersonville, Pa./LaSalle College) and freshman John Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) all picked up victories. Sataloff defeated John Hesse (4-2) at 174 pounds, Courtney downed Matt Horn (6-2) at 184 pounds, and Christopher notched a 4-1 win over Chris Swensen at heavyweight. Against Ursinus (15-1-1, 5-0), Christopher picked up the Generals’ lone victory with a 10-8 decision over Matt Williams at heavyweight. Washington and Lee (5-5, 3-4) will return to action next Saturday as it competes in the Centennial Conference Championships held at Johns Hopkins. The Generals (5-3, 3-2) won the 125, 133 and 165 pound weight classes. Freshman Tom Hosford (Stewart Manor, N.Y./Garden City) won at 125 pounds with a 6-0 win over Mike Sumner, while sophomore David Shubick (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) was victorious at 133 pounds with a 2-1 decision over Jimmy Van Daniker. Sophomore Anthony Boniello (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) captured the 165-pound weight class by pinning Mike Vecchiolo in 1:59. Johns Hopkins improved to 6-7 overall (3-2 Centennial) with the victory. Courtney, the top seed, knocked off UNCP’s Rex Ely 7-2 before defeating teammate, sophomore Kirk Adamson (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher’s), 5-0, in the championship match. Lawrence, the top seed, defeated UMBC’s Mike Hornzell 8-5 before knocking off Jeff Becker, 7-6, in the final. Freshman John Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) went 2-1 to place second in the 285-pound weight class, while sophomore David Shubick (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) also went 2-1 to finish third at 133 pounds. W&L (5-2) won eight of the 10 matches, including one via pin. Sophomore Max Courtney (Jeffersonville, Pa./LaSalle College) won his 184-pound match by pinning Andrew Henderson in 4:24. Sophomore Kirk Adamson (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher) won at 197 pounds with a 9-4 decision over Joshua Squires, while classmate Anthony Boniello (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) defeated Bradon Reynolds (6-0) at 174 pounds. The Generals defeated Stevens Tech 28-20 and Kings Point 28-9, but lost to McDaniel, 24-15. W&L (4-2, 3-1) was led by freshman John Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons), who went 3-0 at 285 pounds. He pinned Will Young of Stevens Tech in 3:42 before defeating Kings Point’s John Brunetti, 11-3, and McDaniel’s Ryan Dieter, 9-6. Sophomores Peter Lawrence (Greenwich, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee) and Jesse Sataloff (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) both went 2-1. The Generals took home the team title with 77 points, followed by the University of Scranton (50.5), Maryville College (49), Washington and Jefferson University (40.5), Virginia Military Institute (37.5), Cumberland University (29.5) and Southern Virginia University (16). Sataloff, the top seed, defeated Washington and Jefferson’s Pat Wilson, 7-1, in the semifinals and pinned Joe Gunter of Maryville in 2:03 to claim the title. Christopher, the number two seed, posted a 3-0 record en route to the championship. He knocked off Southern Virginia’s Joshua Bake 4-1 and Cumberland’s Jake Sheffield 8-4, before defeating Mitch Tenney of Washington and Jefferson, 8-4, in the final. The Generals defeated Centennial-rival Gettysburg 34-16 and Waynesburg 43-9, but lost to Wilkes 22-12. W&L (2-1, 1-0) was led by sophomore Jesse Sataloff (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh), who went 3-0 at the 174-pound weight class. He defeated Gettysburg’s James Stevenson, 12-4 and Waynesburg’s Tyler Allen, 7-2, before downing Bill Bleiler of Wilkes, 14-7. Sophomore David Shubick (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) and sophomore Anthony Boniello (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) also went 3-0 with one of the wins coming via forfeit. The College of New Jersey won the invitational with 168 points and was followed by McDaniel (139), Stevens Tech (85), King’s College (69.5), Lycoming (56), University of Scranton (53.5), W&L (44), Centenary (35.5) and Elizabethtown (17). The Generals were led by sophomore Jesup Sataloff (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) and junior Max Courtney (Jeffersonville, Pa./LaSalle College), who finished fourth in the 174-pound and 184-pound weight class, respectively. Sataloff pinned Mike Mariano of King’s College in 3:21 and then lost to Greg Osgoodby of The College of New Jersey, 5-0. The Generals won seven of the eight weight classes. Each of the following wrestlers posted a 2-0 record to win their weight class.
